Leveraging social media data to understand roadway crashes in Tanzania

The second webinar of AfroSAFE Academy will take place on 8 December 2023 (15-16 CET). Our guest is Boniphace Kudela. Associate Research Engineer at the Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI).

Traffic crashes are among the major cause of fatalities in most developing countries. A lack of a centralized historical crash database impedes the efforts to perform large-scale studies to understand the causes of crashes. However, the information for most major crashes are normally shared on social media. Therefore, this webinar will cover the approach to collect data from social media, extract relevant information, and perform statistical models and text-mining to uncover the spatial and severity of crashes in Tanzania.
